Serving with Compassion: Pastries and pearls at Crittenton

This month, Sisters of Solidarity had the privilege of visiting Crittenton to prepare and serve breakfast to the residents. It was a humbling and enriching experience, allowing us to connect with and support the incredible women and adolescents who call Crittenton home.
Crittenton has been a beacon of hope in the Charlotte community since 1903 when it was founded in response to the tragic suicide of a young, single, pregnant teenager. Civic and religious leaders came together to create a safe, supportive space for young women facing the challenges of unplanned pregnancies, abuse, trauma, and other hardships. For over 122 years, Crittenton has remained steadfast in its mission, positively impacting more than 45,000 young mothers, teens, and children.
Today, Crittenton provides a comprehensive range of services, including case management, healthcare access, counseling, educational and vocational support, pregnancy prevention, and substance use disorder education. The organization fosters resilience and empowerment among its residents, guiding them toward healthier, more stable futures.
Thanks to the generosity of local philanthropist Sarah Belk Gambrell, Crittenton expanded its reach in 2003 to support parenting girls and young women in foster care through Sarah’s House. This initiative offers the same essential services as Crittenton’s maternity and prevention programs while addressing the specific challenges of parenting and raising children.
Furthering its commitment to independence and self-sufficiency, Crittenton launched Legacy Hall in 2011. This Independent Living Program equips young women in foster care with the skills and resources they need to transition successfully into adulthood.
In 2020, Crittenton moved to a state-of-the-art facility in the West Boulevard Corridor, ensuring that its services remain accessible to the growing number of women and girls in need.
Our time at Crittenton was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, compassion, and service. Sharing a meal with the residents and hearing their stories reinforced our commitment to giving back and making a positive impact. We are honored to support an organization that continues to change lives and provide a safe haven for so many.
We look forward to more opportunities to partner with Crittenton and encourage others to learn more about their mission and ways to get involved. Together, we can help break cycles of trauma and create brighter futures for women and children in our community.
